World court to rule on Cambodia-Thailand border dispute in 45 days+

PHNOM PENH, June 2 (AP) - (Kyodo)—Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong said Thursday that the International Court of Justice will within 45 days deliver a decision on Cambodia's request to the court to order Thailand to withdraw its troops from a disputed border region.

Hor Namhong spoke to reporters after retuning from The Hague-based court where Cambodia and Thailand spent Monday and Tuesday in hearings on Cambodia's request.

Hor Namhong led the Cambodian side, while Thai Ambassador to the Netherlands Virachai Plasai led the Thai side, which included Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya.

Besides the unconditional withdrawal of all Thai forces, Hor Namhong said he asked the court to consider a ban on all military activity by Thailand around a temple in the region, and also wants to see Thailand "refrain from any act or action which could interfere with the rights of Cambodia or aggravate the dispute in the principal proceedings."

Thailand said the court has no jurisdiction over the matter, and asked the court to remove the case submitted by Cambodia.

Since 2008, Cambodian and Thai troops have clashed on several occasions over a 4.6 square kilometer of disputed territory near the Preah Vihear temple.

Hor Namhong said that the situation along Cambodia-Thai border, especially in the area near the temple, is still fragile and that fighting could erupt at any time.

The court ruled in 1962 that the temple was in Cambodian territory but made no judgment on the status of the surrounding territory.
