The Natural Resources and Environment Minister affirms to the head of UNESCO that he is in support of Thailand's opposition to the Preah Vihear management plan proposed by Cambodia, as the proposal is an invasion of Thai territory.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suwit Khunkitti met with UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova in Paris to voice opposition to the Preah Vihear management plan proposed by Cambodia.

Suwit explained that Thailand has taken a clear stance in rejecting Cambodia's management of the temple.

Suwit said that he urged UNESCO's World Heritage Committee to make note of Thailand and Cambodia's conflicting statements.

He added that he would try to avoid a conflict in a bid to come to a conclusion and insisted the best solution, in Thailand's opinion, is to withdraw Cambodian troops from the historical site.

Suwit noted he submitted a complaint letter regarding Cambodia's construction of a village that was financed by 50,000 US dollars in aid from UNESCO.

He said the fund was intended to be used to repair the Hindu temple, but Cambodia instead spent it on building a village that encroached on Thai soil.
