Seventeen members of Redeemer Alliance Church on Innes Rd. are heading to southeast Asia in July, as part of an annual English Camp aimed at helping Cambodians brush up on their English-language skills.
Associate Pastor Kaleb Jewell says the 10-day trip is also intended as a cultural exchange.
“We hope to build relationships with the students; we hope to help them understand English a little bit better and to understand who Canadians are,” he said. “And we hope they will help us understand their culture.”
Pastor Jewell says they learned about the camp from a former Redeemer Alliance Church pastor who has been working in Cambodia for 15 years.
However, this is the first time active members of the church community participate in the summer camp.
“This is a first for our church and for me personally as well. We hope to return every other year,” he continued, adding the church delegation is comprised of two pastors, four youths and 11 adults.
“We will be assigned to three students each and help them go through the curriculum in the morning and then in the afternoon we do day trips to help them put in practice what they learned in the morning.”
The cost of the trip was put at $25,000, money raised through yard and bake sales in the past few months.
