World Court to Hear Preah Vihear Case

The Foreign Ministry says the International Court of Justice will hear the case of Cambodia's petition for its review of the 1962 ruling on the Preah Vihear Temple on May 30.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Thani Thongpakdi revealed that the International Court of Justice, or ICJ, will hear Thailand's argument on the Preah Vihear Temple case on May 30.

The case was brought to the court's attention by Cambodia.

It has asked the ICJ to review its ruling on the ownership of the ancient Preah Vihear Temple and its vicinity.

After the hearing, Thailand and Cambodia are expected to submit their defense arguments sometime between September and October to the court.

The ICJ may take up to two years to deliberate the case.

In the meantime, Phnom Pehn has requested the court to order Thailand to withdraw its troops from the disputed area along the Thai-Cambodian border.

The court will decide whether to grant the injunction in June.

The Thai government has appointed a committee to work on the Preah Vihear Temple case.

The special team is headed by the Thai ambassador to the Netherlands.

The committee will also work closely with the Foreign Ministry.
