Border issue raised at Asean session

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen (C) arrives for the 18th ASEAN Summit at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta May 6, 2011. Thailand and Cambodia traded barbs on Wednesday over which side started a bloody border dispute that is set to take centre stage at a meeting of Southeast Asian leaders in Jakarta this weekend.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen raised the border conflict during the Asean leaders plenary session on Saturday morning.

Usually the session deals with reviews of impending Asean statements and the report of the Asean secretary-general.

But Mr Hun Sen raised the border conflict during his opening remarks, said acting Government spokesman Dr Panitan Wattayanagorn.

Mr Hun Sen accused Thailand for firing first and sending troops into the disputed border area.

The Cambodian premier's statement appears to have upset the Thai delegation.

Dr Panitan said Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva will explain "the truth" at the plenary session when it is his turn to speak.

The incident this morning is likely to further cloud the already chilly atmosphere at the Summit.
