Thailand, Cambodia Seek Roadmap To Withdraw Troops From Disputed Border

BANGKOK, May 10 (Bernama) -- Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to a roadmap that would lead to the withdrawal of troops from a disputed border area, adjacent to Preah Vihear temple, according to Thai News Agency on Tuesday.

Thanee Thongpakdi, Director-General of the Thai Foreign Ministry's Department of Information, reported from Indonesia that Thai and Cambodian foreign ministers had agreed the withdrawal must be completed before the arrival Indonesian observers in the area.

Thanee did not set a timeframe for the roadmap implementation and said that the question of when bilateral conflicts and clashes can end permanently would depend on the roadmap.

The process toward the roadmap will begin with negotiation through the Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission (JBC).

Meanwhile, the foreign ministry spokesman denied that Thai-Cambodian negotiations during the ASEAN Summit last week had failed.

He said that the Indonesian foreign minister was in fact quite satisfied with the tripartite negotiation that led to the agreement on the joint roadmap approach.

Thanee added that Thailand would also have to discuss the border issue with the Malaysian deputy foreign minister who had previously thought that Thailand had caused all of the past clashes with Cambodia, which he denied to be true. He attributed the misunderstanding to inaccurate reports.
